Can Microsoft make Exchange 2007 SP1 any more difficult?
First requirement: The server has to install on x64. Second requirement: The new export/import PST function will only work from a 32-bit EMS. Third requirement: The Exchange Server 2007 Management Tools (32-Bit) will NOT install on Vista! So it seems in order to use the new export/import PST function, I must install the management tools on an XP workstation. Am I missing something here?!? ugh! |

Or an x86 Windows Server 2003 box...
Either can be running in a VM as well. Yes, that part isn't pretty - the PST part was baked in later in SP1 (no justification for this broken scenario, nevertheless.... ). |

If the tools won't install on Vista, I suppose they won't install on Windows
Server 2008. And if this is true, I also suppose that Exchange Server 2007 won't install on server 2008 either? |

- Exchange Server 2007 SP1 is compatible with Windows Server 2008.
- Management Tools can also be installed on both Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista (x86 and x64). Exchange 2007 System Requirements http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../aa996719.aspx |

I'm confused Bharat. My issue is that management tools won't install on
Vista. Your first post on 1/19 seemed to indicate you understood that and you suggested that I install it on Windows 2003 Server as a circumvention. But now you seem to be indicating that management tools will install on Vista? Maybe your saying the SP1 version of management tools will install on Vista, but not the RTM version? Can you please clarify? |

Hi Bob,
Thanks for posting in our newsgroup. Exchange 2007 is available in two platform versions: one platform version (the 64-bit version) is for live production environments and the other platform version (the 32-bit version) is for non-production environments (such as labs, training facilities, demo, and evaluation environments). Only the 64-bit version can be purchased because you cannot run 32-bit Exchange 2007 servers in production. There are two exceptions with respect to production and non-production use of the 32-bit platform because Microsoft does allow minimal supported use of the 32-bit version in production environments. Specifically: 1. You can use the 32-bit version of the Exchange Management Tools in production to administer Exchange 2007 servers from Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP. At this time, you cannot use either the 32-bit version or the 64-bit version on Windows Vista. 2. You can use the 32-bit version of Setup in production to extend your Active Directory directory service schema. All other uses of the 32-bit version of Exchange 2007 in production environments are unsupported. More info Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Management Tools (32-Bit) http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=82335 Hope this helps. If you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to let me know. The statement about Vista is true for RTM, but no longer true for SP1. The
SP1 tools can be installed on Vista, and they are supported. One caveat, though, is that there is no Failover Cluster Management tool yet for Vista, so when running the tools on Vista, you cannot manage any clustered mailbox servers. Once the FC Management tools are available for Vista, you'll be able to use them to manage only Windows 2008 clusters. Hope this helps. |
