I have recently been tasked to compare DreamWeaver to Expression for generalized WebPages and access to databases on the local machine as well as on the Web server.

Although I'm quite familiar with DreamWeaver this "Expression" is sort of new to me... which is better/faster for providing/designing rudimentary WebPages and access to both Access and mySQL databases?

Is there anything that can be done -- or done easily/more easily -- it one over the other? It's a thing that cannot be done with one or can be done with the other?

Thanks!

Ross

Hi Ross>

I have found that the combination of Expression WEB with Visual Studio has a
fantastic synergy.

The data access and manipulation to deploy truly "data driven WEB sites is
superior in Expression WEB - be sure to dive into the XAML functionality in
the Expression Blend product.

I have signed on to the whole studio - and could not be more pleased!

The answer is "it depends". I use both and it depends on what I am doing
which I use. For ASP.NET 2.0 sites Expression Web wins hands down. For
Classic ASP sites then Dreamweaver is what I use.

My recommendation is to download the trial of both and see which one suits
you better.

Hello ross,

If you're doing ASP.NET then you're probably going to pick EW. If you're
doing PHP then DW would be my pick. If you're doing AJAX with ASP.NET you'll
need Visual Web Developer 2008 Express or Visual Studio 2008, as EW doesn't
have a clue about MS AJAX (yet!), if you're doing cllient side javascript
AJAX (JQuery, Prototype, Dojo etc) than Aptana Studio is a good pick.

AJAX can be GACd into EW, and hopefully EW-V2 will be a little easier to add
to

The latest version of Dreamweaver CS3 is pretty useless IMO, with that
ongoing high CPU bug. For anyone not aware, there are widespread reports of
users experiencing high CPU levels (50-80%) while DW just sits there idling.
Just google Dreamweaver and "high cpu" and you'll see. I would stick with
Frontpage or Expression Web if it's a choice between using the latest and
greatest DW.

Hello Mike,

I'm using .NET 3.5 which has AJAX built into it, what am I supposed to put
into the GAC? Are you talking about the AJAX Toolkit, not the extensions?
I should be able to use UpdatePanel without any tweaking, no? And how many
FP users migrating to EW have even heard of the GAC... that's well known
to VS users.

Hello jamesf4,

That High CPU bug was patched, see http://syaza.wordpress.com/2007/12/0...ver-cs3-patch/
.. Must have been driving quite a few people nuts for a couple of months though
