Ok, this is a wierd one, folks. After unfortunately installing Tiger
as an update without uninstalling Virex first, I inadvertantly started a series of events that wiped my hard drive (mainly my inexperience and stupidity....) Fortunately, everything except VPC and the Windows drive images were available from a day old backup (whew). Unfortunately, I cannot make a new XP VPC because when I get to the "Enter the registation number" stage to verify that it is licensed Windows copy (which it is from my VPC 6 disk) I am unable to type in the registration number, as several keys on the 17" G4 Powerbook don't register at all that I'm pressing a key, specifically all of the vowels, "z" and "n" that I've noticed. Since I can't enter the registration number, I can't proceed to the next step of the set up. I do have a VPC 6 disk with Win 98SE that I've been able to install, but Win 98 SE is apparently incompatable with VPC 7. Next issue: At work, we have VPC 6 running Win XP Pro, which I was backing up weekly by shutting down with undoable changes committed, then mounting the drive and copying it (should I have been using "duplicate" instead of "copy"?). For some reason, now it will no longer mount the drive, and when I get info it is no longer a drive, but listed as a document. If i try to change drives, it is not recognized as a possible choice (ie greyed out). Any thoughts? Greg Robertson |

Windows 98 SE does work with VPC.......technical support issues are only provided for Win2000 and WinXP by Microsoft Tech support. >I am unable to type in >the registration number, as several keys on the 17" G4 Powerbook don't >register at all that I'm pressing a key, specifically all of the >vowels, "z" and "n" that I've noticed. When you want to make a backup of Windows, Shut Windows down so that it is in a 'not running' state. Then navigate to the Virtual PC List folder (in the Documents folder). Then, either copy or duplicate Windows. There is absolutely no need to 'mount' the virtual machine to do this. |

I upgraded my PB to Tiger this weekend. I tried numerous times to start
windows on my PB last evening. I looked on this site for ideas on how to make it work. Even when I started the Powerbook in safe mode, I couldn't register the numbers. I finally noticed there was an option that you could use the telephone! Had to talk to a machine but it worked! Paul Power wrote: [..] |
