As I understand it, in MOSS 2007 the recommended approach to customize
the look and feel of a site is to use a custom master page, hand that
off to a web designer, and leave the content to those who know the
content.

In simple terms, BlackBand.master looks more black and default.master
looks more blue.

But when I set up a site with BlackBand, most of the web parts still
look like they belonged to the default master page - they are
unchanged. So, the default color scheme looks harmonious, while
BlackBand looks like a pastiche of designs.

I thought that CSS was there to drive the look top down. How far does
this go? Am I missing something?

Pointers to existing posts or documents would also be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi, you got the most details and the idea from Microsoft. Actually,
Microsoft uses a default css file "core.css" that effects every time on
the pages.

The following link explains the branding very good and shows additinal
links.

Yea, read through all these articles.

They did a great job explaining the completely arbitrary and backwards way
SharePoint handles these issues.

It's broken, but at least after reading these artcles you get a better idea
of how to workaround the broken parts to some degree.

After spending months on trying to customize the files for our intranet, the
best advice I can give is: DON'T

Ask your organization if they prefer black or blue. Those are the two
choices. Pick one. ;o)

Daniel,

Thanks for the link! Not only does it have good content, I appreciate
the
links to other sites the CleverWorkarounds author provides.

Best,

Jim
