MOSS 2007 custom.master get site url

Does anyone know if its possible within a custom.master to obtain the
current site url,

The reason is I want to use one master across many sites however I want the
ability to override certain objects (images mainly) by allowing you to have
local versions within a site's picture library. I can do this fine on the
home page but as soon as u move off the home page because the url changes
when your in a list the referance is broken.

Im currently using :-

<img src="Pictures/SP_Banner_Image_1.jpg" alt="desc "

onerror="this.src='http://domain-here/Pictures/SP_Banner_Image_1.jpg'">

About half way down, I discuss the use of tokens. In the example provided
its for finding the style library of any given site collection..

eg $SPUrl:~SiteCollection

MSDN article here outlines a relative token for referencing a master page
the current site ~Site. Maybe it is also usable in the manner outlined
above?
