Hi,

I have two MOSS 2007 instances. I need to move a site collection and
its configuration databases and content databases to another MOSS
instance. How can I do this? I have heard of using STSADM, but it is
my understanding that DOES NOT move the associated databases.

Can anyone assist.

Thanks,

Please try with STSADM export/import 1st. it exports every thing in a
file and when you import on the other end, it imports every thing in
your destination server dbs. so it does move contents.
if you face issues in using it, then simply take backup of your
content db and restore it on same db server with some new db name OR
restore it on another db server with same or new db name.
after db restore, simply go to your destination MOSS, create a new web
application, in central admin on web application management, delete
the content database and add the content database to the web
application. it will move over the whole contents. it moves all of
your web application settings as well.

Thanks for the reply!.

I was able to export the site to a file. My problem now seems to be
with the import. I have the following follow up questions.

1. How do I ensure that the newly exported site when imported becomes
associated with the correct sql server database(s). Since I exported
my site from 'farm A' and now I am trying to import it into "farm B",
the SQL server in "farm B" has no knowledge of the original SQL Server
if that makes sense. The original sql server had stored the
'Content' database for this site.

2. The import command stsadm -o import -url <URL to import to> -
filename <import file name> [-includeusersecurity] is confusing to
me, what URL do I use? Do I have to create something in the
destination MOSS instance before I can import? All I have is a backup
file, how do you know what URL to use?

Thanks

You dont need to worry about database. as URL peice in next answer
will cover this.

Destination MOSS needs to have a web application on it. It means you
will create a web application if there not one there.
during web application creation it create a database on your MOSS
database which will be your FARM b in this case.
after you will create your web application, simply import this to your
new destination URL.

If above does not work for you let me know so i can guide you for next
step. i dont want to write too much to confuse steps.
