Running WSS 3.0 (no MOSS) and Office 2003.

I can create a custom content type inside a document library and/or list
that points to a custom template when I want to create a new item (ie:
my_custom_letter.dot serves as the template for the new letter item, and
my_custom_presentation.ppt serves as the template for the new presentation).

My question is this -- can I programattically populate data fields within
the "new" document with information from the sharepoint site when I click
"new custom_letter", etc??

The idea would be that if I have a document library for a given customer
(that maybe includes some list items with contact information), and I want to
create a standard contact letter that pre-populates their address into the
actual Word document.

I recall seeing somewhere where you could "build" a powerpoint or word
document programattically, so maybe that's an approach (which wouldn't use
Sharepoint's custom template for Content Type at all??)

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!
