Help!

I have been developing webparts in Visual Studio 2003 against
SharePoint SP1. We are setting up a new environment. I think the new
environment will have SharePoint SP2. Here are my questions ....

1. If we use SharePoint SP1, can we use Visual Studio 2005?

2. If we use SharePoint SP2, can we still use Visual Studio 2003?

3. If we use SharePoint SP2, can we use Visual Studio 2005?

Thanks!

Come on, guys.

Let's start saying "SharePoint Portal Server 2003" (SPS 2003) or "Windows
SharePoint Services" (WSS) rather than "SharePoint".

In many questions the answers will be different depending on which product
you are using and should we need to ask you every time ??

Well said Engelbert.

There is a long answer to this question, so maybe you want to expand a
bit on what you want to do.

A very quick overview, with SPS 2003 and WSS 2003 you cannot use .Net2
webparts in any sites or areas. With WSS SP2, you CAN create web user
controls in .Net 2 and use Son of SmartPart to load them into WSS
pages, but not SPS areas. SPS 2003 CANNOT be run under .Net2. Believe
me, I tried it. It seems to work, then you find a few key parts that
just don't!

I haven't tried it yet, but there has just been released some templates
for VS.Net 2005 that allows you to create standard .Net 1.1 SharePoint
web parts within VS.Net 2005. These will be exactly the same as if
they were created in VS.Net 2003.

So, in theory, you can ditch VS.net 2003 altogether and just use VS.Net
2005, but you might still be creating .Net 1.1 controls. I am looking
to do this as soon as I have a day to play with it and make sure it
works.

I hope this helps.

Engelbert - good point. Let me correct my question to say:

REGARDING WSS:
1. If we use SharePoint SP1, can we use Visual Studio 2005?
2. If we use SharePoint SP2, can we still use Visual Studio 2003?
3. If we use SharePoint SP2, can we use Visual Studio 2005?

REGARDING SPS:
1. If we use SharePoint SP1, can we use Visual Studio 2005?
2. If we use SharePoint SP2, can we still use Visual Studio 2003?
3. If we use SharePoint SP2, can we use Visual Studio 2005?

So, it sounds like if I just stick with VS.NET 2003 even if I use WSS
SP2, I can develop web parts just fine for both WSS and SPS? This
sounds like the safe path rather than going to VS.NET 2005?

Not a great correction - you are still saying something that doesn't exist,
because there is no SharePoint SP1 or SharePoint SP2 only WSS SP1 / SP2 and
SPS 2003 SP1 / SP2.

Many thanks to all and especially to one of my coworkers who sent me
this Microsoft link:

"Service Pack 2 for Windows SharePoint Services and SharePoint Portal

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/as...806971033.aspx

It has a section specifically addressing this question ("Support for
