Hi,

can anyone explain me the objective of themes in scorecards?
I know they allow us to group objectives or kpi groups, but I dont
understand the advantage of this.
Beside appear in scorecard view that one objective/kpi group belongs to
a theme, what do they do?
Thanks
Rita Marchão

PS: sorry for my poor english

From a feature point of view in the Business Scorecards Accelerator, I
could find 2 situations using themes:

1) There is a Theme and Initiative View Web Part:
>>

Theme and Initiative View

The Theme and Initiative View lets you view the themes, the initiatives,
or both the themes and initiatives associated with a scorecard. If a KPI
group was added to a theme or initiative when the scorecard was created,
the name and description (optional) of the KPI group will also appear.

When you configure the Theme and Initiative View, you specify whether
you want the view to display the scorecard themes only, the scorecard
initiatives only, or both. Rather than showing both themes and
initiatives in the same view (as shown in the illustration below), you
can create two separate Theme and Initiative Views, one showing
scorecard themes and another showing scorecard initiatives.

2) The Visio Strategy Map Builder has a Theme Container object - don't
know how exactly this works yet.

From a theoretical scorecard point of view, this Microsoft paper
explains the role of themes in understanding strategy better; not sure
if this is implemented in the Visio map:

Strategic Themes

The strategy map in Figure 1 shows a strategic theme. The strategic
theme is a grouping of similar objectives and their measures across
perspectives. It helps make a complex strategy more understandable by
organizing and categorizing objectives and measures. It also reduces the
amount of information and number of causal linkages that need to be
drawn on a strategy map. A complex organization might have several
strategic themes, with objectives and measures designed to gauge the
effectiveness of the organization in pursuing those themes.
