Is VPC a multi-threaded application / multi-processing aware software?

It will only use one processor, and all guests will be single-processor
virtual machines.

I'm not sure whether you can run 2 VPCs at the same time and use 2 different
processors though, perhaps someone else can comment?

nope, you can't. if you have 2 cpus, the sound and disk threads,
IIRC, will be spun off to the 2nd processor

Great thanks for the help.

What I am trying to achieve is to purchase a new machine to replace the four
that I currently run. I would like to run all systems on this new single
system using a combination of Virtual PC and Virtual Server. I understand
that Virtual PC is not supported on Window Server 2003 and that when Virtual
Server is released it will only be supported on Windows Server 2003. From
what I understand people have managed to run VPC on 2003 without any
problem, I will of course test this several time myself before committing to
this proposed setup.

I therefore currently aim to purchase for the host system a (Dell Precision
650) single Xeon 3.x processor system with either 2 or 4GB RAM (4 being the
max supported by 2003 Standard) with an Nvidia Quadro FX 1000 or 3000 with
dual DVI monitors (running VM in the largest window possible on both screens
as they it will not support full screen for more than on VM at a time). I
intend on having the host system running a system drive of 2 80GB spindles
as RAID-1 and a data drive of 3 250GB spindles as RAID-5 containing the
VHDs. Ideally hardware RAID on SATA drives.

The host running Windows Server 2003 with run with the least apps I can get
away with such as Paintshop Pro and a game I have requiring a 64MB video
card. The hosts will be a combination of about 10 VM desktop OSes on VPC
with the VM server OSes eventually running of Virtual Server.

Can anyone see any potential problems or issues that may arise with this
setup except for Virtual PC not being offiicially supported on Windows
Server 2003? Ideally I'd like to run a single host machine but will have to
get seperate machines for VPC and Virtual Server is I absolutely have to.

Thanks and regards, Poch

Yes - you should not run Virtual PC and Virtual Server on the same host OS.
And yes running Virtual in a production environment on Window Server 2003 is
a big supportability issue.
You will also not get great performance out of the 10 VMs running under
Virtual PC (all running on one CPU etc etc etc)

Hi Mike,

What's wrong with running VS and VPC on the same host as long as they aren't
running at the same time? Curious before I install...

Jonathan,

I'm not entirely sure it is a supported config or not guaranteed to cause
any issues (rather like the running of VMWare and Virtual PC).
Also the 2 products have differing requirements for the host OS. Virtual PC
is for use on Windows 2000 and XP and Virtual Server is for use on Windows
Server 2003 - running both on either of those platforms violates the
supported host OS requirements and you may run into unforeseen issues.

I thought of that after I posted. Basically right after I pressed "Send" I
thought to myself "Wait a minute, the supported hosts are different"

Well, thanks for confirming

its just how win98 is reporting the cpu. most likely its due to the
way vpc skips timing cycles.
