Hi,

We've got 5 citrix terminal servers running. They run on W2k with Sp3
and all the updates installed. On top of that we've got Citrix
MetaFrame XP FR3 running. The Citrix-users connect to two
file-servers, which are both running on Windows 2003. All machines are
member of a windows 2003 Active Directory, and all servers are
connected through a gigabit switched network.
Users get errormessages very frequently, saying they can't save their
files, because the file is in use, or read only. When I check the
fileservers for file-locks or read-only files there's nothing wrong.
In Excel (we're running Office XP Sp2) it is pretty easy to reproduce
this problem, especcially when the network is a bit busy. Busy means
everey citrix-server has approximately 30 users connected. The
fileservers however are only using about 1% of their NIC-capacity
then.
To rule things out we've uninstalled the ArcServe client, we've
uninstalled the Trend Micro Virusscanner and we've uninstalled the
shadowcopy-client, but that didn't help.
We've disabled opportunistic file locking, on the citrix-servers and
on the fileservers, this didn't help either.
This morning we've changed the TCP Acknowledgment settings (because we
found Microsoft KB Article Nr 328890), but that didn't solve anything.
Of course we've checked things like quota, diskspace and memory
availability on the citrix and data-servers, there are no problems.
The eventviewer of the citrix-servers or the file-servers don't give
any additional information.
Because we're running a quite identical situation with similar citrix
servers but with a Windows 2000 data-server without problems, I assume
it has something to with the SMB/Netbios traffic between the Windows
2000 based Citrix server and the Windows 2003-fileserver.
Can anybody help me out in this?

Thanks!

Hello,

Before we go any further, I would like to know the following information:

1. The issue occurs after migration?
2. The issue occurs in TS?
3. How to reproduce?
4. Does the issue occur while saving files to network share? What is the
result when you save a notepad instead of an office documents to the shared
folder? Can you Save As the files to the network share when you encounter
the error?
5. Take a screen shot of the error message and upload there or send it to
v-rebc for research.

According to my experience, this issue is not related to the migration.
There are many possibilities to raise this issue when you save the Office
documents to a network share. Please check the following KB articles to see
it helps:

I understand you have uninstall the anti-virus. Please double check if you
have removed, not disable the anti-virus and firewall, such as Norton and
McAfee. For more information, please refer to the following Microsoft

In the end, after trying several options, we solved the problem by
adding these registry keys on the two file-servers:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\lanmanserver\parameters]

"MaxMpxCT"=dword:00000800

"MaxWorkItems"=dword:00002000

There were to much simultanious sessions (file handles) from the
citrix-servers, thus explaining why it only occured when the
citrix-servers were crowded with people.
Problem solved!
Thanks to anyone who helped!
