I just put togther a new computer on the weekend and Oblivion is performing
poorly

I have the following
E6700
8800 GTX
2GB RAM

I have exited the sewers at the begining of the game and croseed the water.
I then left the game until the view starts to rotate around the character

I would expect the view to move smooth and seemless around the character
like in Windows XP. Instead the view is jerky and terrible. According to
Oblivion it is fairly consitant at 42fps

I expected Oblivion to play slower on Vista then XP but this is unplayable.

Since I am getting 42fps I dont think it would be the NVidia Drivers

Is there anything that can be done to make this playable?

Thank you

Could be something as simple as defragging your HDD.
Try the new Beta nVidia drivers.

We have a thread with more info on this game, have a look if you want.

OMFG, 42fps, well boohoo.

I wish my 7800 could spit out that many fps. Try deleting your Oblivion .ini
files re-run the game with default settings.

First time I played on my new vista system I copied over my old settings
from XP it crashed, ran like crap, etc. Restarted after removing the INIs
from Documents\My Games\Oblivion (Leave the Saves folder alone) and the
problems went away.

Sorry for the boohoo comment, but at least I gave you a suggestion other
than what VGR Admin and VGR Scotty posted, and I quote, "[snide comment
followed by rude euendo], My game runs great, get the beta drivers,
[derogatory comment]!"

If you're feeling down, install Morrowind, better game.

Thanks for the comments and I also did not like VGR using my thread as
advertising and providing no useful comment.

I wasnt posting the fps to brag to just highlight that the game should not
be jerky. I would guess it is not the graphis that is causing this.

I had done a clean install of Vista and Oblivion but maybe in my playing
around something got in the INI file

I have played Oblivion on my old system with all the detail on low. Good
game but felt like I was missing all the eye candy.

it's a good job it VRG then, and if you read what was posted you'll see that
we gave you a couple of pointers plus a place to go to actually find the
solution, but hey you carry on with the jerky game.

Hey Craig,

Your Quote:
"Thanks for the comments and I also did not like VGR using my thread as

So you didnt read what i posted at all then ?

My Quote:
"We have a thread with more info on this game, have a look if you want."

Games in Alphabetical order.
Driver/Performance issues section.
Plenty of members to offer help and advice.

No need to advertise on here, busy enough site as it is.
Sorry you feel this way.

Oblivion runs amazingly well on my system, even though I was running on an
old 754 skt amd64 3000+, nothing ran that great on that system, except
oblivion.

Granted in default mode it tends to have a bit too much pop-up for my
tastes, but it's certainly doable.

Sorry for your stuttering issue (and my scarcasim), if I find something more
constructive i'll post it tonight. :)

OR, instead of forcing him to go to your website you could give him the
"gist" of the solution and say, hey check out my site if that doesn't work
for you.

Glad your website is doing so well, but I think you should apologize, your
post was not that useful, and it was basically an advert for your site. I'm
pretty sure he did read your post.

Don't be so egar to get people on your website, we'll go if were curious,
not if were forced.

Nobody is'forcing' anybody to go our site...we gave him a'gist' of a
solution and also asked him to checkout the site as some people have already
posted about oblivion on there, and we aren't going to apologize for trying
to help someone, I do hope this helps.

Thanks Andy,

I do find this one an odd problem

Even when i turn the detail all down it will still be slightly jerky

Last night i started to disable some of the Windows Services not needed for
a gaming computer
UAC
Terminal Services
Windows Search
Superfetch

More info here
http://www.technospot.net/blogs/how-...rmance-part-1/

It is less jerky but something is still wrong.

i double checked the RAM, it is running in dual channel mode and handled a
prime95 tourture test nicely.

Right now i dont think it is the graphics since it is still jerky on the low
detail. i am running the latest beta drivers.

Any idea what the BSTask is in Oblivion? When it is really jerky the BSTask
count starts climbing fast. I haven't found anything on Google regarding
this

I am trying to avoid these VGR comments as they really get on my nerves.
Even worse is they are copying the content from the newsgroup and posting it
on their web site as if they were the source and not the newsgroup.

Try turning ON V-Sync and triple buffering.. I know that helps me when
things appear to be jerky on my PC.
Mine runs farely smooth and with out issues, I have the updated patch, as
well as the Knights of the Nine, and silver.. dang.. i can't remember the
name of the expansion now... this may sound odd, but try upping your res a
little,
for grins, you can try disabling things like shadows, or changing how
shadows are rendered, will help a lot with little cost in realism and see if
that doesn't help. and make sure you have up-to-date video drivers AND
motherboard drivers. if you have installed any driver from windows update
I'd seriously check for newer drivers from the manufacture, especially if
they where for your video card, or anything motherboard related.

just my 1/50th

Yeah, went over to the "site that will not be named" just to see, it's just
a web board with a dozen or so posts and they are importing the Vista usenet
groups. And I think I was right, they need traffic to get those adspace
bucks rollin. It's a good domain name though, maybe if they installed word
press and wrote some original how-tos they'd get some traffic.

BSTask, no idea. Did you try killing one of your CPU cores? (Task Manager,
right-click on Oblivion.exe in Process and Set Affinify to just CPU 0) Just
to test it. I'll have to play some more and see if I can reproduce this one.
I was playing System Shock 2 just now, the only thing I hate about Vista is
when you press escape in SS2 the main menu is in 640x480 and the game runs
at 1600x1200, in XP it took like half a sec to switch resolutions and 1
flicker. Vista takes about 3-5 seconds and flickers 3-4 times. It's just
sad. I'm on the upside down level and realizing playing SS2 without EAX
turned on = sucky, can't tell where things are coming from had 2 assassins
walk right up behind me, scared the beegeezus outta me.

Starting to agree with the whole games for vista being not all that great.
I'm just glad my XP box still works. Well it will work once I put it back
together.
