if you are going to try and prove something, it would be advantageous to keep the data in a running table instead of posting just the daily results.
personally I could not be bothered to try and go back and find the previous day(s) information.

Good point. I will make an excel file along with notes per day, and hold
this information private until non-standard issues occur. Then, weekly
instead of daily, I report in this bulletin any updates, thus keeping
things as brief as possible.

I had the same problem on my other computer, started slowing down, freezing
up, then working fine, then wouldn't boot at all; motherboard died.

27-5-2007 9:35 explorer.exe 157868 23964 explorer.exe 2x visible

Notable issues Vista leak-test week 21/2007:
* Day 5 (today) the handles Decreased for the first time (from 24539 to
23964)
* Since Day 2 two separate explorer.exe programs are visible in
Taskmanager. The second one is still taking the same memory amount,
11664 KB. This mem-value is constant (+- 1KB difference mostly, so it
is catagorized stable)
* Since Booting the OS May 23 (Day 1) an rapidly increasing memory
usage amount of explorer.exe is notable
* Slowly, my OS is behaving more unresponsive and sluggish. It feels
and seems related to the increase of the explorer.exe memory usage.
* Day 1 memory usage explorer.exe = 23408 KB, Day 5 memory usage
explorer.exe = 157868 kb (see tabel). Increase factor = 674%

>> To user sidewinder 9X, your post May 26th:

Thank you for sharing your info. Having bought my computer +- 1,5 years
ago, and inspected two month ago for any defects, there has been made
one modification in my computer. My CPU temperature was getting too
hot. This issue has been fixed by a computer specialist, who installed
a new CPU-cooler. Since then, no heat problems or rising CPU-fan noises
are occuring. So I assume my motherboard and CPU are not defective
(yet), and therefore not affecting any test-results.

Now troubles are getting starting: I cannot open any PDF document
anymore, because lack of memory resources. In the middle of opening the
document, only the frames of the PDF docoment are visible, then after 1
minute Adobe Acrobat 8 closes with a "This program won't work anymore"
error. After closing Outlook (this program runs in the background), I
retry to open the document, and now it works. So clearly all memory
resources are exhausted. I will now kill explorer.exe, (NO reboot!!)
and see if the system stabilizes.

I cannot fix this behavior on my own, because I have no programmin
skills
Therefore I have decided to quit any future testing and reporting. M
only hope is, that someone ever fix this memory leak a.s.a.p.

For any users who are planning buying Vista anytime soon, you have bee
warned. Is is a great OS, but not matured yet for server/busines
purposes. This is my conclusion for now, based on the experience
described above

Of course, I keep watching this space for any feedback or solutions yo
might have for me

Hi everyone !

It is now week 39/2007, so 16 weeks after my last post. After several
Vista automatic Updates, the memory leak problem still exists. Nothing
has changed, so I still have to kill the explorer.exe task each 3 (max.
4) days. Until now, I brand Windows Vista as yet unstable for business
and server purposes (in fact, in every situation where computers don't
shut-down each day Vista is not matured yet). I have for comparison
purposed bought and installed a Windows XP Professional version, and
running the same tasks as on my Vista system. And guess what: with
Windows XP Prof. NO LEAK is present ! Each time Windows XP gives
explorer.exe the memory back after is has been used and grown to approx
35% of the total installed memory (4GB). This proves that my problem is
OS (Vista)-related.

Any feedback, anyone ?

Did you report the problem to Microsoft and include
detailed instructions to reproduce the error? No one
on the newsgroup can do anything about it.

Hi Albert--

I think it was a valid question for the newsgroup. The newsgroup often
gives info LOL on things that members of the group might influence with
interaction of teams at Redmond (so that premise that they can't do anything
about it--and not just during Beta testing is not correct--I know that for a
fact). Even if it were something no one could change, it's worth knowing an
answer.

If it's Windows, it can delvelop memory leaks and you can recognize them and
often eliminate them.

Again, often they are caused by 3rd party interactions with Vista and you
***CAN do something about them.

Memory leaks can occur in any Windows OS, past and future--ME was one of the
all time worst for that--sometimes they're caused by 3rd party like this
example from Ed Bott:

Ed Bott is co-author of Windows (XP) or (Vista) Inside Out (MSFT Press):

Finding Managed Memory leaks using the .Net CF Remote Performance Monitor

Many many examples can be found of causes of memory leaks in Vista by simply
using a search engine.

I noticed this also on my Vista installs especially with Nvidia videocards
so if you have one I'd make sure to update to latest Nvidia driver.
It would happen mainly when playing either MS FSX or any 3D game for long
periods of time for that matter!

I noticed the 2 optimization patches MS released not long ago seem to have
helped alot.
It even mentions in there somewhere that they did some memory management
tweaking so I don't know if that helped or more mature video drivers?
Anyways like I said I haven't seen the problem anymore so it's fixed for me
as far as I'm concerned.

I have not reported my memory-leak problems to Microsoft yet. I will
make a test-guide for them, and upload that for evaluation. Thanks for
the quick feedback(s).

More then a year has passed, and only since yesterday (July 3rd, 2008) I
have found a solution for the memory leak problem. The explorer.exe
memory along with other system memory resources will be given back,
after I use a tiny util called SweepRAM. It is only 6kb (!!) in size,
and can be downloaded from 'SweepRAM | Computers are fun, right?'
(http://88.191.26.34/computers_are_fun/sweepram/) . Don't forget to
download VB6FR.DLL and place it in your \system32 directory, because the
util use this Frence localized DLL (my Vista is US-EN localised). When
memory shrinks too badly, just use it, and all the hidden claimed RAM
will be given back to the OS. Finally I don't have to reboot anymore
after heavy Vista-activity. I hope with this solution I will be of any
assistance to other users who might have similar memory-leak problems.
Goodbye ! Regards, Albert.
