Twice this weekend, I loaded latest update Windows Search 4.0 for Vista
kb940157. Twice the update caused “search failed to initialize.”

Tried to fix it performing these functions:
-Indexing options- default
-Rebuild index
-Services > Windows Search – but it failed to restart
I performed the above functions 3 times but search was still hosed.

Remedy:
-system restore
or
-remove update via uninstall update feature.

Anyone else have this problem?

I would suspect disk corruption. Rightclick Drive icon in Explorer,
Properties, Tools tab, "Error Checking"

Thanks for the reply and the suggestion.

After having removed the Windows Search 4.0 for Vista update, I scanned my
drive for virus/malware. No finds of virus/malware.

I then ran CHKDSK (selected both auto fix and recover bad sectors).
CHKDSK result: No indications of corrupt files or clusters. “Volume is clean.”

At this point, I suspect that the latest update is the main cause for my
Search function failure to initialize.

Since my Vista and apps are running great, I’m going to elect to not
reinstall the update.

Thanks again.

Cheers…

If it's any cold comfort, I installed the Windows Search 4.0 update
tonight on my Dell M1330 with Vista and had the same problem. The system
restarted with tons of errors; re-booted and then I got the Blue Screen
of Death and had to do a system repair (multiple steps) to get back to
the last good boot. Definitely something about this update causes
corruption.

Wow. I feel lucky compared to your problems.

I haven't found anything on the inet about problems with this update. And
since there is little response in this thread I can surmise that only a few
users are experiencing problems with that update. Maybe because we have some
corrupt OS files that Search 4.0 is looking for?

I've been running my Vista for almost a year and, overall, my Vista is
running fast and smooth. No other problems right now (except for the 1 or 2
times a month that Windows Explorer crashes for 2-3 seconds when I'm using
some old software.)

Thanks for the reply, and if you find anything regarding the Search 4.0
update, I'd appreciate it if you'd post it here or start a new thread at this
forum.

Cheers...

whenever mine tries to update it gets to 100% of stage 3 (configuring
updates), then it reboots and on restart it says that configuration failed
and it has to roll back the update.

Last week, I migrated my data and applications from my administrator
account (that I had been using on a daily basis for all tasks) to a new
standard user account, thinking that my administrator account that I had been
using for almost a year had some corrupt system files.

I now have my Vista user accounts set up like this:

-one administrator account that I only use for computer maintenance tasks.
-one standard account that I use on a daily basis.

The Search function is working fine now.

I have problems with Windows Search 4.0 as well.
I have completely reinstalled my system several times, just to find out what
causes the problems.
Only after installing Search 4.0, Search crashes a couple of times a day.
Rebuilding index doesn't help.
Next time reinstalling, I'll skip the update to 4.0.

My problem is a little different, the update process just stuck on this
update of windows search 4.0, I tried just to uncheck this update and even
change my update settings to "download only but not install without
permission" but when I do restart of my computer before it turns off he's
trying to finish that update and just nothing happens, i waited for an hour
and just pressed a restart button on my system block, but when it restarts
update appears again and trying to install it from the beginning... please
help me guys, this update is so annoying, how can I get rid of it?
