Hi,

Is there a way to specify how many recent documents are displayed in the
'documents' folder on the start menu?

Thanks,

marc

Salut Marc,

There may be an easier way with third party tweaker, but this will do
it:

Copy the text below between the dotted lines, but not the dotted lines
themselves. Open Notepad and paste it in. Save the result in a
suitable location as recent.reg - making sure that the default .txt
extension doesn't appear in the file name.
Double-click on the saved .reg file to merge the contents.
Restart.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies
\Explorer]
"MaxRecentDocs"=dword:00000004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the above I have set the maximum number at 4. If you want a
different number change the dword value indicated, e.g 10 would be
dword:00000010
8 would be dword:00000008
{count the zeros to make a maximum of 8 digits.

Okay thanks.......

But how do you keep at least the last 10 or (whatever number you choose)
always showing up in recent documents. It seems that XP deletes them all
after they reach the designated number.

I don't really agree with your statement that Windows delete the Recent
Document history when they reach the designated number.

1. Open My Computer
2. Click Tools - Folder Options
3. Click - View tab - click Show Hidden Files and Folders
4. Goto this location: \Documents and Settings\User Name\
5. Here you can see a hidden folder name "My Recent Documents".
6. It contains nearly all the files you have opened after fresh windows
installation.

You can create a shortcut of this folder on your Desktop for easy access (by
right-clicking on folder - Send To - Desktop (Create Shortcut).

or

You can set it as toolbar on your Taskbar by Right-click on your Taskbar -
pointing to Toolbar - New Toolbar and choose the Location. This way you can
see it as Cascade menu as you see it in Start Menu.

However, you can still can not specify the number of items to be displayed.

Hope this help, let us know!
