sata dvd-rw drive over usb2

I'm trying to get an internal sata dvd-rw drive to work over usb2.

I'm using a sata->usb2 adaptor board that I ripped out of an external
hard disk enclosure but the drive isn't recognised. The adaptor board
was running a regular 3.5" sata hdd and has external AC power so I was
hoping it would seamlessly work with any drive much like most IDE-

When I plug it in the motorised tray works, but the drive isn't
recognised with or without a CD in it

You have discovered that not all SATA->USB adapters are made to work
with all drives. Most of these are made to work with most hard drive.
DVDs and CDs tend to require additional drivers for accessing over USB
ports.

Drivers is fine - it's why I'm posting here on a windows xp forum and
not a dedicated hardware group.

The problem is, xp knows about my dvd-rw model (it was originally
installed internally directly via SATA) so if there are any drivers
needed it should (?) pick them up automatically, no?

If not, I can't get to the "unrecognised device" stage in device
manager where I can set a driver and tell XP that it's a dvd-rw drive
etc.

So any pointers on how to get the software to recognize it or is it
possible the hardware will *only* support HDDs (which I find quite
unlikely)

What smlunatick is saying, is some USB2 to SATA adapters know the
ATA protocol, but not ATAPI (for optical drives). If the adapter
is relatively modern, it will also support ATAPI.

You can see some responses here, of a USB casing with optical
drive inside.

A program like UVCView, can dump some basic information at
the USB device interface level.
