Using WinXP with Office 2000, using shortcut bar. Icons
for shortcut bar seemed to be one item out of sequence, and a couple custom icons were just black squares. Used TweakUI for XP Icon Repair Tool thinking this would fix it. No go. However by deleting one of the unused Off2000 S/cut bar files from "Customize" the icons corrected themselves on next boot - BUT all icons on desktop, not just std default icons, are displayed in either 256 or 16 colour, and the default icons are low res version alternatives. The color quality is set for 16-BIT. All other icons in all programs are fine - full16 bit resolution. Even the desktop paper is in 16-bit. Various sites said that the ShellIconCache file is corrupted - Hmmm, i know how to show all and protected and hidden files, and it is still not to be found anywhere. Icons still low res - any ideas? |

Windows XP can lose high res icons by installing the Windows XP Powertoys as you have. You can read about it on my Powertoy FAQ, http://aumha.org/a/powertoy.htm -- and there is a simple Registry patch fix.You can download the fix here: http://aumha.org/downloads/xpicons.zip I advise that you never modify the Registry, no matter the source of the patch, without first backing up the Registry. With Win XP, setting a System Restore restore point will suffice. |
