All,
Sorry for the 101 type question but I had a problem with my installation of windows XP and had to install the system from the CD as apposed to a folder (e:\disks\windowsXP\I386) witch I normally do. The problem is I can't find an article on what Registry Keys I need to modify, in order for windows to look for a I386 folder on the hard drive for necessary drivers / installation files and not ask me to put the original installation CD in to the CD Drive. Thanks in advance. CES |

You already got good advice, so here's just a remark by the way. I suspect the reason why you couldn't install from a folder is that you renamed the i386 folder to some other name. The XP installer doesn't seem to like that. I'd be curious whether I hit the nail on the head and you indeed renamed the folder. Please let us all know by replying to this message, if you find the time. Hans-Georg |

Hello CES,
If you are running Winnt.exe and this is failing during setup the CD is not the issue and it's very doubtful that this is setup. All the files needed for setup are copied to temporary folders on the local hard drives. Virtually all file copy problems during text mode setup which is what this sounds are the result of RAM issues, hard drive issues, overclocking, possibly DMA. If the error occurred after the final reboot of of setup, then it may be the registry key or if you are adding in additional drivers or possibly some unattended settings. But if you are just running winnt.exe and not doing anything special and the file copy errors occur after the first reboot, the odds are that something in hardware has changed.
