Hi,
I use W-XP SP1. My desktop icons become corrupted. All shortcut icons lost the sqare with the arrow (although a small line is visible where the square should end). Some of the icons (Word, Outlook,...) are shown as green squares. Also in the explorer some files (not all) have green-square icons (regardless of the view and the type of the file). What is wrong? How to fix this? Thanks!!! |

Install TweakUI. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...powertoys.mspx TweakUI > Repair > Rebuild Icons > Repair now. You may want to increase the icon cache also. Start > Run: Regedit. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer. Create the string value "Max Cached Icons" in the right pane and assign the value "4096". Reboot when done. |

My Outlook icon is trashed on the Start menu (the one that windows puts in and labels "E-mail"). If I went to the registry key you mentioned and temporarily changed the value to zero, would this effectively flush out the icon cache, or is this a BAD idea? |

Aha! Replying to myeslf may be the first sign of madness, but I just found
what I wanted in the Knowledge Base. Changing colour depth refreshes the icon cache, so all I need to do was change to 16-bit and back again! Many thanks for putting the idea of a cache in my head so that I knew what to search for. "Rojo Habe" <no-one> wrote in message news:5500 [..] |

TweakUI is installed on all of my machines under German WinXP and there is no problem at all. > If I went to the registry key you mentioned and temporarily changed > the value to zero, would this effectively flush out the icon cache, > or is this a BAD idea? That's no good idea. Note the range of this particular value: "Icons Randomly Change to Different Icons" (Excerpt) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/132668/ | The Max Cached Icons value data range is between 100 and 4096. | The default value is 500. |

TweakUI breaks this even worse. Run line 4:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm Which resets your shell icon bpp to 16 and your shell icon size to 32. |

Hello everybody
I have a similar problem, only I used TweakUI's "Repair Icons now button and now they are all messed up. They look as if they were take from Windows ME or Windows 98, but I am running an XP machine. On to of that they look as if they were displayed with 256 colors rather tha with a gezillion collors as usual. I have tried all the registry trick and also TweakUI, RefreshEm and all other tune up tricks nothin changes the icons. Am I doomed to a retro-existence of icons on m desktop, taskbar and all the folders? Help!!!!!!!!!! In desparation and frustratio Maiko PS: do think of formating my machin |

You can read about TweakVI for Vista. Use at your own risk as I have never used it. Google pulled it up, which may be a quicker way to solve a problem than posting. http://www.codejacked.com/a-tweakui-for-vista/ "Audioray" <Audioray> wrote in message news:ea00 [..] |
