I have XP Pro OEM, fully updated, including SP3. Unfortunately the
Recovery Console was not installed on the machine by the manufacturer. If I try to install the RC from c:\i386, I get the famous "error reading information from netmap.inf" error. My first question: in case of an emergency, can I use the old RC.iso which is available from several sites? My second, related question: must the Recovery Console be 'SP3-updated', or is it independent of the actual version of XP running on the machine? If it is dependent, how can I update the RC CD to SP3? Thank you for your help. /luigi |

I did that, but I get the "error reading information from netmap.inf". I
have tried to follow the MS suggestions in http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;307654 but the value in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows \CurrentVersion\DevicePath Value Name is 0000. Is this the correct value, which I should paste as REG_EXPAND_SZ data type? /luigi "ju.c" <bibidybubidyboop> wrote in news:#RlpiJXuIHA.1220: [..] |

There is a RC.iso in many places, but it is an SP2 (or earlier) version. Do you or anybody else knows if an SP3 version exists? Or is it possible to slipstream SP3 into an SP2 version? /luigi [..] |

ju.c,
thank you again for the pointers. I think I will get XP ISO Builder, and see if it can convert the old Recovery CD (I assume that means Recovery Console CD). If all else fails, I will take advantage of your kind offer. /luigi "ju.c" <bibidybubidyboop> wrote in news:uEKckhXvIHA.3500: [..] |

Hi, I am facing a problem of recovery with my system with Windows XP SP3, I
have XP SP2, when I try to upgrade it says, ur cd is of a lower version than the one on the computer! What do I do, I don't know, what slipstream means, and where I get it from? This is the problem I am facing! I scanned my computer for spyware using Spyware Doctor, and it detected a highly infectious trojan, which got quarantined, and which I removed without setting up and system restore point! So, every infected file which was quarantined with that trojan, was removed instantly! After rebooting my computer, my FDD blinks several times, until finally flashing the message, "The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or or other removable disk that is not available, insert the status disk and click OK." After this message comes up on my screen, and when I say cancel, the windows installer rolls back, and gets initialized again, and the same message gets flashed again! I don't know why this is happening! Kindly help me out! Will this problem be fixed, if I upgrade Windows XP SP3 again on my computer? It doesn't allow me to either install or un-install programs, stating, that there is another installation taking place, kindly complete that installation to proceed with this installation, and stuff like that! Re-installing XP is no option for me, since I have alot of files and settings on my computer and I'd like it to stay! Do let me know, what can be done, as quickly as possible. I have Original, Windows XP Pro SP2 with me right now, what can be done? Thanks in advance! Cliff! "ju.c" wrote: [..] |

Is that the only option left Nonny? Will the installation of just windows
components after slipstreaming my current SP2 version, and leaving all my files, applications and settings solve the problem? Or is it recommended to do a clean installation again? "Nonny" wrote: [..] |

Sorry to butt in, but I just received a reply from MS SP3 Support, with
the following interesting statement: "Based on our Knowledge Base, Recovery Console must be installed before you install SP2 or SP3. If you have SP2/SP3 installed, we cannot install Recovery Console on the computer." The technician, very kind and corteous, added that the simplest way to to access the Recovery Console is to use any XP Product CD. I tried with a SP2 CD, and I was able to start the RC (I did not continue, since my system does not require any recovery task). /luigi =?Utf-8?B?Q2xpZmZvcmQgQW51cCBOIERoYW1hbmlnaQ==?= <CliffordAnupNDhamanigi> wrote in news:5B34FDC2-7EAB-4D52-ACF7-6F0B6DA560A4: [..] |

Well, I've re-installed my computer anyway! Thats what support recommended me
to do! Anyways, I'd wanna know, how to slipstream my SP2 version into SP3 verison on a new CD, in case any such corruption of core system files takes place in the future! It's seems to be a complicated process, I don't seem to follow the instructions given on the net for the same! I am kinda giving up, when the process askes me to choose an service pack executable or i386\update\update.exe! I am not able to locate that file on my computer! Kindly help me out in slipstreaming, since I wouldn't have time to update my computer to SP3 everytime I install SP2! It would be far better to work on an already updated computer through the CD, than sitting down and letting it upgrade after installation of SP2. As of now, I've again updated my computer to Windows XP Professional 2002 SP3, I don't intend to do this through automatic updates the next time! Kindly help me out! Thanks! Cliff! |

Thanks alot Gord! That really helped! I still have a problem though! Which
particular file can be counted or assumed as a service pack executable? It really confuses me, which file I should choose as an executable for further processing! Please help me out in recognising a particular file, or give a particular executable file name, which I can choose from the lot available for integration! Thanks! Cliff! "Gord Dibben" wrote: [..] |
