Media player sounds work but no system sounds or web site sounds can be
heard, the audio codecs i have have disappeared i think and the only one left
in the 'Audio codec properties' is the 'Microsoft PCM converter'

Please help

It my work computer and i think i've done something to my computer i can't
fix!

Stuck Again!
I had the same problem, you need to re-install your codecs

Go to Control Panel
Select Add New Hardware - the system will search and then ...
Click - Yes, Already Installed
Scroll to the bottom of the list and select Add New Hardware Device
Select Manual Installation
Select Sound, Video and Games Controllers
Click 'Have Disk'
Enter C:\windows\system32
Click browse and find mmdriver.inf
Select each codec in turn
If you are prompted for missing files they should be in c:\windows\system32

Unfortunately you will have to do this for each codec, but you don't have to
reboot after wach one, wait until you have done them all.

About half way down the list, my computer started making sounds again! I
installed them all anyway.
