I am working on rolling out a new CRM 4.0 deployment. I have CRM up and
running and now from a client machine am trying to get Outlook integration
working.

Please note that NONE of the PCs that will be using this are members of any
domain, they are all standalone.

I created an AD account for myself and have successfully used it to log into
Outlook. Now I run the Dynamics config wizard, enter in my info and
encounter the above error.

When I hit the URL from this PC that I've specified in the wizard, a dialog
box pops up prompting me for a username/password. Nothing I've entered works.

I did find this link but the solution (which I have not tried) not only
seems like a bandaid, but it's too complex for remote users (mostly
non-technical sales people) to handle:
http://nishantrana.wordpress.com/200...-successfully/

I've tried setting security on IIS/CRM to allow anonymous, but I still get
the same failure error (and when hitting the URL with IE just get a blank
page).

I need to make this as simple as OWA for the end user if possible. Thanks!

If the users are going to be stand-alone and not part of the domain that the
CRM server belongs to, then you need to configure the CRM for Internet
Facing Deployment [IFD]. You will still need to create AD accounts for each
of them so that you can set up CRM user profiles, but once that is done the
users will be able to connect to your CRM (via the internet presumably?)
using forms-based authentication (similar to how OWA works).

But you also seem to have some othe security issues there, if you can't
access the CRM from a client workstation but can from the CRM server itself.
What account is the CRMAppPool application pool using as its identity?

You need to get the browser-based version working without a hitch before you
even think about introducing the Outlook client.

THANK YOU!!!!!! I've actually never even heard of an IFD deployment until
your post! I can't believe with all my hours of searching and reading about
CRM and a 401 error, the subject has never once come up. Now that I know
what to look for, I've made some progress. I have another question, but I
will post that in a separate thread since it's a different topic.

hit a few glitches along the way, but i'm now up and running 100%
with an IFD as far as i can tell anyway. now i just need to figure
out
what exactly a CRM does and the best way to use it :). looking for
training materials now.

thanks again for the pointer.
