I agree that "confusion in the Mandriva community" is far too broad,
perhaps it should say "ERACC is confused".

But anyway, there is more than one way to set DNS servers, but no matter
what way you use, the only thing that matters is the 'nameserver'
entries in /etc/resolv.conf.

The way I set the nameserver entries in /etc/resolv.conf is with vi,
then I remove any DNS1/DNS2 entries from /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ethN,
then add RESOLV_MODS=no to /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ethN.

I prefer to undo what the MDV installer did and keep things simple.

I kinda feel for Gene. He needed a lead in for the subject.
Might be better to use something like

Two methods for managing Mandriva linux DNS nameserver values found in
/etc/resolv.conf

Been there, done that. :)
Now I have a script to munge config files after install.

Downside to managing some MDV config files outside of the gui tools (mcc)
is the gui tool might erase your custom settings. :(

Still, it is done that way quite a lot. Just do a /whois/ on a domain and
look at their nameservers. Most of the time they will be listed by their
FQDN rather than by their IP address. ;-)

I have never seen FQDN used as nameserver entries in /etc/resolv.conf.
(neither have you because it's 100% wrong)

whois != resolver(3)

The "whois" directory is not used by resolver routines on your system.
