(Note running Mepis 3.3, Firefox 1.0.1, Acroread 5.0.10
http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1120a.pdf Maybe its just my system, but when I go to the above official IRS PDF form for corporate taxes (1120), the form opens but I get errors saying it requires 5.1 or later than 5.0.5 of Acrobat. There is no 5.1 version for Linux but there is 5.0.10. I can fill it in but can ONLY print it a page at a time (fortunately its only 2 pages!). What's up with that? (But at least it prints!) I cannot save it with changes, because the IRS says... For users of Adobe Reader: beginning October 25, 2004 new fill-in forms will be enabled with "document rights" which will allow you to save what you have filled in on your PC. Version 5.1 or later of Adobe Reader is required. When the form is opened, a "document rights" message box will be displayed if this feature is available. THERE IS NO 5.1 FOR LINUX !!! I tried saving a copy to the local system but that didn't help either. Anyone have a work-around for this problem? (Does anyone else have the problem?) I wonder if 5.1 will work in Crossover Office? The IRS hates Linux !!! Thanks, Al |

No. I've tried xpdf which prints the form fine, but will not let me fill it in.... which is the whole purpose of using the form! Will gpdf work with Acrobat 'fill in' pdf docs? Al |

The IRS is just using *Adobe's* current version of the software. Adobe is just 'not keeping up' with its own software for Linux. I was able to 'print to file' as a way to save the IRS forms I filled out as *PostScript* -- this works just fine. Yes, this is a seriously geeky trick, but it works. Both pages (forms: f1040.pdf, f1040sc.pdf, and f4562.pdf). I then printed them from ghostview, one page at a time, since I wanted double-sided printouts and for only two pages each, it was easier to manually print the odd pages (multiple times -- one for me, one for the IRA, and one for the Mass DOR (the C and 4562 forms)). Acrobat Reader 5.0.10 under RH 7.3. If you are using Crossover Office, you might as well get 7.<mumble> -- yes Adobe is that *seriously* behind on porting their *current* version of Acrobat Reader to Linux. The good news is that they seem to getting there -- Acrobat Reader 7.<mumble> for Linux is in beta test right now (no, I don't know if it is still possible to get a beta test copy of Acrobat Reader 7.<mumble> for Linux -- last I heard the beta test program was closed). It is my understanding that *only* Acrobat [Reader] handles Adobe's 'fill in form' PDF hack. Neither ghostview/ghostscript nor xpdf do. Does gpdf handle them? The problem is NOT in *just* printing the PDF forms. The problem is filling in forms and *then* saving or printing them. *I've* been able to use Acrobat Reader 5.0.10 for Linux (under RH 7.3) to fill in the IRS's PDF fill-in forms and *print them to a [PostScript] file* and then print the PostScript file. The whole point of the fill in forms is to get a perfectly filled out form, which will expedite the whole tax return process. Being able to print the forms is only 1/2 of the process. *I* already had hard-copy blank forms (the IRS (and the Mass DOR) sends out a whole fat booklet of forms and instructions).
