OK been running 7.1 on my old Dell Dimension with limited memory and I am
thinking of building a new computer from scratch. I have noted some
compatibility issues mentioned here with certain chip sets. So far nVidea
seems to be the best way to go, but what about motherboards, I am
thinking of a dual core Intel chip but I am not really wedded to Intel, I
run an AMD64 on my XP machine. I intended to do photography and maybe
play with video so I am looking at the Ubuntu Studio project. Any ideas
and suggestions?

Impossible. 7.1 doesn't exist.

Read the thread with a subject about newbies. Then correct your
version references in future. There is no version 7.1, and never
has been such.

For what its worth. I run three machines with Ubuntu 7.10. All on AMD64
single core processors on three seperate motherboards. Soltek SL-K890Pro
939 board,Via K8T890 chip set. K8N-LR Asus Nforce 4 SLI, 64 Opteron.
Gigabyte K8N51-GMF9, Nvidia 6100 chip set. all with 2gig mem, different
brands. They all have different chip sets and they all preform great
with Ubuntu.
BMAN.

Nvidia graphic cards work well. In the past year or so, the same can be
said of Intel and VIA graphics adapters. I have a couple of desktops with
integrated VIA and a laptop with integrated Intel - they all work
splendidly.

Let us know when you've finished with your plonking and we'll see whether
there's anyone left around to help you.

Cheers.

I'm also considering doing this. I'm also using an old Dell Dimension 8100
which is short of memory (256MB). I considered upgrading the memory, but
the RDRAM it uses is very expensive and I can buy a new system unit from
Novatech or Ebuyer with 1GB for not much more than the cost of 512MB RDRAM.

I'm also going to need a bigger disk soon, as I have 1,000s of digital
photos.

I've never built my own box before, so it would be a good challenge.

Wait until January and get a new Penryn. The Extreme version of the
Penryn core is out now, the mainstream version will be out in January.
Intel based motherboards are always well supported.
