I haven't the faintest idea. I don't break what's already fixed...

Everything works perfectly well apart from this update problem; and
that only since HH...

I only use one interface - actually, I did change the mb, so it's
probably a different card and/or a different slot

Worked first time :-) or should that be :-0

If I asked why, I bet I would regret asking...

Dead chuffed I am; thanks :-)

I'll take that bet, The insertion of the "Time" fixed it. The update
manager was looking for an IP address for "Time" but could not find it as
it did not appear in the hosts file without the domain name, it did not
(but probably should have) looked for "Time.Poppyland"

Strange though that my hosts file is as out of the box and I got a
hostname entry but no hostname.domainname.

trevor@leoben:~$ cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1 leoben

# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
ff02::3 ip6-allhosts

Good. I'm pleased it did.

Nah. It's quite simple really.

Sudo is looking for the <machinename> entry. It just sees
<machinename.domainname> so obviously throws a hissy fit.

No worries.

You really should consider doing a <hostname> <hostname.domainname>

It helps for numerous things. For me, generating M-ID's in slrn is a
huge bonus. With that "correct" setting, I don't have any issues.

That's probably of no interest at all to you though...reading it back.

Move on. ;-)

Interesting actually, I looked in the network setting as there was no
domain set so I set one, it replaced hostname with hostname.domainname:

trevor@leoben:~$ sudo gedit /etc/hosts
sudo: unable to resolve host leoben

So I put both in now.

Aaah The ubiquitous "network-settings". This is one GUI app that makes
me thank the lord for the cli.
