I have Hardy running under XP under Virtualbox and have a few quirks I
would like to ask about. It will update and run software from the
repositories but runs only at 800x600 with the option of 640x480. The
sound and ports work OK but even though I am running windows at
1024x768, Hardy will not even offer that option.
I had this happen when I installed the Linux driver for Nvidia cards on
my native Ubuntu installation.
My next attempt will be to install XP under Ubuntu and the problem may
go away.
This post is coming from windows since that is where I am by necessity
of debugging the Virtualbox.

I've never used Virtualbox, but the way it works in VMware is
_everything_ is virtualized (except VMware allows some unmodified
peripherals through). In particular, your hard drive, sound + video
+ network cards, serial/parallel ports, and so on are all emulated to some
extent. The software fakes the same virtual peripherals no matter what your
real peripherals are. The appropriate driver is one for whatever card
Virtualbox emulates, which probably has nothing to do with your real
card.

As always, YSoftwareMV.

No,
Am I missing something basic? I don't have guests (other users/guests)so
I run as 'Bill' with some random password.
There, as here, I have to log in, even with only my account. Since
Ubuntu runs so nice natively, I used this installation as a model.
Are there more hoops to jump through?
Should I just go to VMware?

Different distribs offer higher resolutions under Vbox, so i'm
guessing you should be able to manually edit the config to do higher
(I haven't bothered doing mine yet, but need to get around to it)

It would be nice if Sun could get together with Ubuntu to make it work
better "out of the box" though :-}

Bill,

You need to install the Guest Additions... There should be a menu
item in the window (while the guest is running) to mount the Guest
Additions iso... then, from the guest you install it. I'm doing XP guest
on Ubuntu 8.04 and it makes a world of difference. Mouse works in
seamless mode, video res can be altered, etc.

You may have to download the iso yourself if it's not present.

I went there and bookmarked it so now I get to read it all.

Not sure if this is totally relevent to your situation, Bill but I just
went through an Ubuntu install where the "nv" driver was installed and
could only set the resolutions you mentioned above.

Ahhh, OK, I now see you had the same problem with your native
install....installing the newer updated Nvidia drivers resulted in higher
resolution options here.

Might also want to take a look at the vert and horz refresh rates for your
monitor in your xorg.conf.

Personally I don't give a rat's ass what OS a person uses to post with and
if there are rascals who do object to someone posting outside of the linux
OS fuck 'em.....certainly no need for you to justify yourself to other
newsgroup participants for using a viable option, that's for sure.

I have a different, somewhat oddball situation. In this, my native
Ubuntu (for now) the defaults work but the new Nvidia drivers break it.
I am running at 1024x768 at 60Hz, so the card and monitor are OK both in
Ubuntu and XP.
What has me a bit baffled is that XP and Ubuntu, even at the same
monitor settings, move the screen left or right.
Mysteries to be solved.

I hear that!
I'm jumping back and forth between systems and I'll be damned if I
re-boot into Linux just to pacify a few jerks like Dan C., D. Eth, or
Hadron the jerk who trolls many groups.
Today is for learning and not flaming.

Different kind of "guest"........here's a blurb from the VB FAQ:

* "How come it doesn't detect my nVidia/ATI/whatever graphics
card?"

Because the guest sees a virtual graphics card, not the host
graphics card. The virtual graphics card provides the necessary VESA and
VGA features to make the guest operative systems work OK. Additional
features, like higher resolutions, is provided by the graphics driver
included with the guest additions. More details on how to install guest
additions and features of the virtual graphics card can be found in the
manual.

Different Ubuntu distros affect my monitor settings. I've found other
mysteries to procrastinate since the advent of monitors with on
screen displays, but eliminating XP as a critical factor may add to
the challenge, if not easing the burden, of your unsolved mysteries.
