That is all the info I get when I try to start Evolution on my brand new
9.1 install. I tried uninstalling it (and all its dependencies) and
reinstalling. Well, it works often in windows. :)

But no help here. Same error. I don't even know where to start looking.
Any tips/advice?

Thank you.

Okay, I had the idea to run it from the command line. Now I at least get
more info, but I am way too inexperienced to make anything of it. Here is
what I get from the command line:

user@linux:~> evolution

** (evolution:7910): CRITICAL **: file bonobo-activation-activate.c: line 370
(bonobo_activation_activate): assertion `ac != NULL' failed
(Killing old version of Wombat...)

** (evolution:7910): CRITICAL **: file bonobo-activation-activate.c: line 370
(bonobo_activation_activate): assertion `ac != NULL' failed
user@linux:~>

I guess I should have also mentioned before that the version of evolution
is 1.4.6-16. (It is the package that came with 9.1)

Thanks again for your help.

This indicates one of several possibilities. First, it could be a bug in
Evolution, but doubtful. Second, it could be missing a needed library
and it getting a null pointer (sort of a bug, since an assertion
shouldn't fire if debugging was complete). Could be others, too. One way
to help find the path to follow is to run it with strace:

strace evolution

Then look at the last dozen or so lines where it bails out. There may be
a clue there -- or post them and someone here may see what's happening.

Well, I already got this particular problem hammered out, and it was, as
you suggest, a missing library.

But I was trying to figure out precisely what command/tool/app would let
me trace the calls a program was making, and you have given that to. That
is very useful information that I will certainly use to solve my next
problem. Thank you.
