Hi all,
I've heard the usual. That Suse 9.2 does not support Write on NTFS partitions (which is really annoying when all you colleagues run Windows 2000/XP/2003 and are using USB keys to exchange data). I know that captive can do it using the Windows drivers. But i've also heard that in 2.6.8 NTFS write have moved out of experimental in the kernel. Does this now mean that we can actually use write access directly supported from the Linux Kernel/Suse ?? Do anyone have write enabled in any way ? and will it work with the hotplug system in Suse ?? Regards Lasse Christiansen, |

As long as M$ does not make the code available, NTFS will be in test, beta or unsuported mode. It will improve and it will never be 100%. So try it and be prepared if it fails. e.g. format the USB stick in FAT 32. I doubt many of your cow orkers will notice the difference. ;-) |

Why not just format the key as fat32 or vfat? Solves all the problems :) |

Not with the SuSE-kernel ( without recompiling). /proc/config.gz shows: CONFIG_NTFS_FS=m # CONFIG_NTFS_DEBUG is not set # CONFIG_NTFS_RW is not set |

To fully support write you need to install captive: http://www.jankratochvil.net/project/captive/ I've had this working on my Suse 8.2 partition with kernel 2.4.26 Follow the notes on Jan's site and remember that captive creates a new group called 'captive' which you must add to every user who wants to write to your ntfs partition. Hotplug events are only created when you hardware is inserted so if you have a single hard drive with an ntfs partition and your suse partitions hotplug will not be used. If however you plug in an external usb hard drive with ntfs partitions then a hotplug event will be created. ( I don't know if captive will work in the case of external hard drives.) |
