When I installed jaunty ( a few months ago now) about the only thing I
had to do was press a few keys to ID the keyboard. All worked brilliantly well. The other day, my UK keyboard on my XP box started playing up (sticking keys) - so I have a US keyboard to hand and thought I replace it with that (I can just about handle swapped " and @ and $ for £). Talk about abysmal. The nonsense I had to go through to get it to work... (Yes I know this is XP). The control Panel to set this up is of course *Not* the keyboard icon (well what reasonable person would expect to use the keyboard icon to configure a keyboard). Naturally it is all done in "Regional and Language". Ok ok - once I know that - click away at the unintuitive options etc. - and totally screw up the situation to the point that (by following the instructions) I was unable to login (har har). The ubiquitous windroid reboot thankfully fixed it - but not only was the keyboard mapping incorrect (some of it was right!), but I started getting dialogue error msg's in some ****** script - probably used by Martians. None of the keyboard settings would "stick"... sigh. I actually like XP and think it is probably the best M$ have come up with - but this was pathetic At last my questinn! I wonder what would happen if I need to change the keyboard on this jaunty box? Would the OS be as kind as it was at install time? What if I wanted to replace the ps/2 keyboard I have there now with a usb one? Is that also an easy thing to? I'd just like to know in advance -as one does :-) thanks |

Assuming you mean UK>USA, well, I had a quick look and (assuming you are using Gnome) you go to System>Preferences>Keyboard and click the layout tab. This is with Karmic. > What if I wanted to replace the ps/2 keyboard I have there now with a > usb one? Is that also an easy thing to? I've done it dozens of times when I need a USB keyboard or a ps/2 keyboard, just plug it in. From memory I think with ps/2 you may need to restart the PC, but USB is hot-swappable. > I'd just like to know in advance -as one does :-) > thanks In fact, I have 2 USB keybaords plugged into this machine right now and they both work. |

I wanted to rule out software issues, so I plugged another USB keyboard in and it worked. The wireless keyboard is because the machine is my PVR as well as my computer and is plugged into an 84" projector as well as a 28" TV. Trailing a keyboard wire across the floor is messy and its odd with my wireless mouse. Anyone contemplating using Linux as a media hub, I recommend it. |

That way I don't have to mess with that pesky "shift" key! |
