Not sure if this is by design, but I have a user who wants to manage
multiple Distribution Lists but doesn't want to be a member and recieve the e-mails assoociated with the DL. If I don't make the user a member of the DL's, they are unable to manage the group membership and the check box is selected to "Manager can update membership list". Does anyone know if there is a way to provide a user the ability to modify the group membership w/o having to make the user a member of the group, or is this by design? Exchange 2007 with AD FFL/DFL 2003. |

That permission isn't dependant on the user having a mailbox since Exchange doesn't really care who gets to modify the members property. You can use the ADUC and give anyone (or more than one user) the "Write members" property. What you haven't said is whether you have more than one AD domain in your AD forest, and whether the group to be managed and user that is to manage it are both in the same AD domain. If they are not, there's a good change that the GC the user's Outlook is using isn't in the same AD domain as the grou and, so, doesn't have a writable copy of the data. |

I agree it should have absolutely nothing to do with membership, it should
just be permissions. It is in a single domain with only one forest in the enterprise. I just don't know if there is some untold rule about only being able to manage (From setting it by this gui). I could manually do that, but I am not going to start setting individual permissions on an object, that is a really bad idea. |

There's nothing mysterious happening. There's nothing "untold". >I could manually do that, but I am >not going to start setting individual permissions on an object, that is a >really bad idea. A "bad idea" in your mind, perhaps. But what do you think happens when you check the box that says the manager can update the membership? And how would you propose dealing with a situation where more than one person should be allowed to manage the membership? You're going to love Exchange 2007! A lot of the GUI you seem to depend on is gone, replaced by Powershell cmdlets at the command line. |

I like Powershell. I hate the GUI piece that deals with manage, it expects
certain things and be changed (Forgotten right now) but it is so cumbersome (We still have a Exchange 2003 machine) I go back to the 2003 tools. This summer we are going to Functional level of 2007 and then I will be limited. Not looking forward to that. |

I understand that, but using a self documented gui is much simpler for the
company. |
