Hi there,

For some reasons I have had to reinstall my WSS 3 and restore the data.
Until now I thought, that the backup command
"STSADM.EXE -o backup -url https://server.domain.com/sites/it -filename
C:\temp\backup-it.dat -backupmethod full"
would save ALL data on that site and beneath, but as I mention now all
existing web sites under IT (for example .../it/knowledge) were not saved!
So I only have the original sql data files (for example
"WSS_Content_9f3ca79009734f9a8bdf85dd995b6e21. mdf) and I have NO IDEA if and
how I can restore the data within.

Any suggestion would be VERY, VERY appreciated!!!
C.

You could try looking at this article:

Thank you, I will try this, even this article is about wss 2!
But: Is there no other possibility for example with some sql commands or
maybe the "addcontentdb" option on stsadm.exe?

Any help ...
C.

I haven't tried it on 3.0 so I'm not sure. My main suggestion would be that
if this is a production site and time is of the essence you should call
Microsoft.

Hello Lisa,

Thank you very much for your answers!
Finally I have managed to restore almost all data with the "normal" restore-
except for the last day on which one of our chiefs had used the WSS 8 hours
for a lot of data input :-(

Today I have tried to restore this data also, but without any success, so I
will check my backup policy in the future. The problem with WSS (and I guess
with SP 2007 too) is the "not existing documentation": You you have to search
through a lot of locations to find help (or not!).

I have learned my lesson and will double check my backup strategy ...

Thanks again & best wishes from Germany,
C.

You could have used the technique specified here
http://alpesh.nakars.com/blog/wssv3-on-a-dc-4/

Might want to bookmark for your reference.

MAKE MY DAY!
It works!

Actually I have taken the "GUI way", but I guess your way will also work and
I will try it later! Anyway: I have now find a solution for restoring
data(bases) in WSS, if the configurtion is lost by some circumstances ...

Great answer, great job, great beginning of the week
:-)

Thanks again,
Christian

P.S.: Next time I will try to wait a little longer for the answer ...
