I'm not clear on what you want to do.

A Media Center Extenders is a separate device (either a purpose-built device
or an xBox) that allow you connect to a Media Center computer. It allows you
to have most of the function of the Media Center PC at a remote location; it
is not software that "runs" on a PC (XP or otherwise).

802.11b won't work with extenders/MCE. you need at least 802.11g.

what do you mean by run on XP?

what version of windows/mce do you have?

As stated you need an extender or an Xbox, neither XP nor MCE can act as an
extender.

Thanks for the help Jaime
I Have a PC Running Xp Pro that has a lot of movies on it. It is also on a
network with a wireless access port.

what I would like to do is to access my moves from my tv set by a remote.

I look at a media extenter from linksys model Dma2100 but it said only works
with windows vista thats what I dont understand.

How does the extender work with the pc over the network

Thanks for your help

A true "Media Center" Extender (one that is designed for the Windows Media
Center OS in XP or flavors of Vista) will only link to a Windows Media
Center system such as XP MCE 2005 or Vista Premium/Ultimate, not plain XP.
There are design to work with the unique capabilities of Microsoft Media
Center (like watch Recorded or Live TV at a remote location).

However, there are various devices that have similar functions that will
work with XP. The are called Media Extenders/Media Servers/Media
Players/Media Hubs/etc. Here's a couple device at Circuit City:

Most seemed to be either G or Draft N if you want to do wireless however.

Jaime Thank you for taking the time to help me with my understanding of how
media extenders work. I now think I understand what I need and want to do.

Thanks Again

see

for some of my thoughts on the HP device. they have a pretty good
interface for their own mode -

At the risk of appearing rude and hijacking this thread, perhaps this
is the place somebody can answer my question.

Must you have Windows MCE to run a DMA2100 (or even the older Kiss1600
variant)? I have Vista Business and fear it won't run this device.
Although ideally I want to stream everything from a NAS box anyway via
Upnp

I don't know what the Kiss1600 is you refer to. Some extenders, HP
and DLink, have a second proprietary interface that works with
Windows Media Sharing. Officially, I don't believe Windows Media
Sharing works with Business.

Ok thanks for the advice - I was under the impression that the DMA2100
supported Upnp and would see a NAS box. Was hoping it would see the
device without the pc needing to be turned on but it's sounds otherwise

The Linksys extenders do not have a secondary interface for Windows
Media Streaming which would enable this. The D-Link and the HP
extenders do have this.
