Subject: [free-culture] Feb 23rd: OLPC Jam Session

Free Culture @ NYU,

A number of us have purchased OLPCs

http://www.laptop.org

in the give one get one program

http://www.laptopgiving.org/en/index.php

and are interested in building on it.

So we've booked a room at ITP

http://itp.nyu.edu/

and are going to bring our laptops and have fun making new
content for the little green machines. We're also going to talk
about making the laptop more manageable as a machine to use
everyday for adults -- you'll be able to learn how to hack your
OLPC and install XFCE (a lightweight GUI), Ubuntu, and take
advantage of its unique hardware configurations.

This session will also be for those people who are interested in
learning more about the OLPC in general, and what they can expect
if they're expecting a special delivery. Come with a jump drive,
and of course if you have one -- your OLPC.

Here's the info for those of you who can't be bothered to read non bolded
sentences:

NYU OLPC Jam Session
Saturday, February 23rd, 2008
12pm-5pm
721 Broadway, 4th Floor, Room 442
New York, New York

Please RSVP here (registration required):
http://wiki.freeculture.org/NYU_OLPC_Jam_Session

If you are not NYU and have not registered by Saturday AM, we
will not be able to accommodate you.

Having an OLPC is not a requirement but please come prepared to do work and
learn.

Thanks!

Fred Benenson
President, Free Culture @ NYU

That sounds like a lot of fun!

Be sure to try out PLT Scheme on the XO!

PLT builds against OpenGL. The XO does not have hardware acceleration.
Consequently there are two ways to run PLT on the XO: install Mesa for
software-based OpenGL emulation or build PLT without OpenGL support. I
chose the latter, without testing the former, and published the
binaries here:
